Weekend Reading: Wait for the Price Drop for Kinect or Move

Microsoft has confirmed that the basic bundle for its upcoming Kinect motion tracking system will cost 149.99 dollars and will include the device itself and Kinect Adventures, a game which is set to show off the capabilities of the new device. Sony had previously made clear that the starter package for its own PlayStation Move system will include a camera, the main wand like controller and a demo disc for 59.99 dollars, with the sub controller costing an additional 29.99 dollars.

There are some who claim that the Microsoft made Kinect offers a more innovative experience and that the price for the PlayStation hardware quickly adds up. There are others who say that the Move technology is better suited for traditional gaming experiences and that the Microsoft solution will only offer limited freedom of movement. Both sides have arguments but when the launch dates arrive for these new systems players would be best served by putting the money they would spend on them aside and use them to get some video games over the Christmas period.

Microsoft and Sony are each trying to both get more money from those who already own a PlayStation 3 or a Xbox 360 and to expand the possible customer group for their home gaming consoles. It's impossible to do both at the same time. Sony, with the prices it has set (lower at first glance), seems to be interesting in enlarging the audience. The 150 dollars price tag for Kinect suggests that the motion tracking is for now aimed at early adopters. It's unlikely that any of the two devices will see huge sales initially, given the general weakness of the hardware market and the on going financial troubles of the targeted audience. Which means that soon after launch gamers might actually see prices drop significantly on motion tracking able consoles, with Nintendo itself reacting by making the Wii with the Motion Plus add on cheaper than it is at the moment. Given the possibilities for early 2011 Kinect and Move are only interesting when they go under 100 dollars for the starter package.

Sony never stated their starter package would be $59.99 .. It is, and always has been listed at $99.99 MSRP. In fact, nothing in their MOVE lineup is priced near $59.99..

The OPTIONAL nav. controller - ie: YOU DON"T NEED IT, $29.99. You can simply use a normal Dual Shock controller if you don't wish to purchase the OPTIONAL nav controller. As the nav controller mimics the left side of a Dual Shock.

There is quite a 'value' in Sony's starter package as you call it.. Known to the rest of the world as the MOVE Sports Champions bundle. The game, $39.99 - PS Eye, $39.99 & Move controller, $49.99. So, it's already quite a 'value' @ $99.99 when the items total $129.97.

While Microsoft Kinect is priced at $149.99 with a crappy game for kids. Joy.

This article is ridiculous. Sure, you can hold out and wait for the prices to come down.. but, that can be said about EVERY single piece of hardware out there. Seems the editor (HAHA!) of said article needs to get out more and actually research & proof read before posting to the interwebs is opinion of whether to buy or not. Sad thing? He's probably wasn't at E3 to actually test these products before spitting out his/her's two cents..

Why don't you go ahead and review 3D gaming now. I'm sure it will be a good read.

Haha, I agree with you EvilET, except on the minor bash of Microsoft's Kinect. Kinect isn't about the hardcore gamers, which i happen to be [gamertag = GrizzlyBear77] and I respect that. Nintendo made a crapload of money on the Wii's technology and this will be the smart thing for Microsoft to do in order to broaden their range of consumers. Hardcore games will start to become compatable once the lineup of Wii like games dry up. I am pre-ordering Kinect with high hopes that the tech and the experience will make me an avid Kinect user; this coming from someone who already ownes a Wii and wants a better experience than it can give.
