Weekend Reading: Grand Theft Auto IV User Complaints

Quite a glitchy game

The Grand Theft Auto franchise is probably one of the most popular series of games out there, dominating the sandbox genre for quite some time now. It won over a huge amount of fans with its exciting story and great gameplay, making its developer, Rockstar, one of the most popular in the whole industry.

But, as fans eagerly anticipated the new installment in the beloved series, GTA IV, it seems that Rockstar created quite a few problems. Although the console versions, which were launched in April this year, didn't have that many glitches, with the PC version of the game things were not so much on the bright side, as it would seem that its developers didn't really test it thoroughly enough, as proven by the large number of issues that customers who spent their hard earned money on the game later encountered.

We too reported about the fact that Rockstar released a pretty faulty game, and plenty of our readers expressed their concern and/or disapproval towards the company, which in many cases ruined the whole gameplay experience for quite a lot of players. Although the developer announced that a patch for the game was at the moment going through the approval process at Microsoft, in order to be released on the GamesForWindows service, users are still very angry. So, in order to make things much easier for the development team, we decided to create a small list with the major concerns and problems that users have been facing.

First and foremost, the biggest issue is the fact that the game is poorly optimized and that even with the most high-end computer, a decent framerate can barely be achieved. We received testimonies from users who had bought new PCs or laptops especially for this game, with specifications greatly higher than the minimum ones recommended by Rockstar and found themselves experiencing slide-show-like frames, with the game constantly loading the new parts of the city.

Another quite annoying problem is the fact that even though in the graphics menu screen it shows that there is enough video memory, when players start their game a lot of freezing occurs, rendering the title unplayable for a considerable amount of time. Even players who had top of the range graphic cards, with plenty of video memory, encountered this problem. The fact that Rockstar has commissioned the two main graphics board manufacturers, Nvidia and Ati, to enhance their drivers has not changed anything, as the development teams still needs time to make and thoroughly test these new video card drivers.

Other users have complained about the fact that they can't connect another controller to the PC and be able to configure its buttons in the game. The fact that GTA IV can only support the mouse+keyboard configuration or the Xbox 360 controller scheme has made quite a lot of users throw away their copy or return it to the store where it was bought from.

All in all, these are some very severe problems, which add up to the long list of other errors that the game shows, a list that was elaborated by Rockstar. It's a real shame that such a great title, with a very compelling story that took realism to new heights, is plagued by such bugs that have made a lot of people hate the franchise and, implicitly, Rockstar.

Let's just hope that the development team is doing everything it can to solve these problems. If there’s anything else that you encountered during your GTA IV gaming sessions, let us know in a comment to this story.

This game seems very microsoftish to me. Thinking they know best and not allowing any changes. In san andreas I used the dpad for driving, the sticks for remote heli and some of my mates used the sticks for driving and walking, whilst I and some mates dropped the pad and used the keyboard/mouse for walking and shooting or one mate did the driving and one the walking and shooting. In GTAIV I had to hide my controller from the game with a dll from xboxpademulation, otherwise it would change the radio station whenever I turned. I then programmed the pad to give keyboard commands on key presses, the problem is that you have to be going a certain speed for the camera to follow you, so I have to use cinematic view to straighten it at low speeds and have one person on keyboard and mouse and one on pad for multiplayer, good but should be an option not a neccessity, or use the keyboard and mouse only. One of my favourite parts of gta is the driving and I'm not going to spoil it with analog, which takes longer to make corrections, like a small steering wheel for a race driver, lots of little presses are as good as analog anyway.
That's not important however, the point is why would they prevent you from playing it how you want, this along with many other bugs possibly heightened by catering for slow dis"c" drive speeds and a lack of understanding of the hardware pointed out by them measuring your settings on graphic memory size rather than performance and gpu and expecting you to edit the commandline to remove restrictions, means I will actively be looking for games which are primarily for non console pcs.

GTA 4

Good graphics.
Good control of character.
Good combat options.
Good city-feel/atmosphere.
I like the flying rats/pigeons.
I like the more realistic driving physics.
I like the improved AI.

Need more weapons (where's my flamethrower, minigun, satchel charges, chain saw, pool cew, shovel and so on... ... and the two-gun wielding)
Main character boring.
Main character's friends are boring too.
The storyline is boring.
The "hanging out with friends" part is annoying!
The fact that you can't use the money you make on anything other than weapons, clothes and hookers is lame, as the prize for each mission is money... A money game with nothing to spend money on?
Music selection a bit disappointing.
Miss more side stuff... Kill frenzy and so on...
Miss the country side from San Andreas.
Miss gambling.
Miss the JET PACK!
Miss the bicycles.
Miss the planes.
Miss being able to dive in water.
Miss being able to use parachutes (I haven't found any yet).
Miss more clothes, hats and glasses.
Need more safehouses.
For PC: I had to install and make an account at 2 or 3 different sites (Social Club, Windows Live, and some other Microsoft place) to get the game going. This is annoying.

Well, on Windows 7 this game ran perfectly. But when I switched back to XP with SP 3. It has given me nothing but problems. Half the time the game wont even load. I've left it to load on the upper side of half an hour. And when I come back to my computer, it's still exactly as it was when I left it. Though sometimes it does load fine, and for the first ten or fifteen minutes, it runs great. After that I drop to about a frame every twenty seconds. And even hitting escape to check my settings will freeze the game. I've tried patching both the Social Club and the game itself. And nothing has worked. And looking for help from Rockstar Games is like finding the fountain of youth. The only thing I can get there is a page with a picture of Liberty city on it. No content or links. I can say if this is how Rockstar games makes their money, they won't receive anymore from me. =(
