The breach came just after a new petition against George Zimmerman was initiated

The official website of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was hacked on Sunday. The attack came shortly after the civil rights organization initiated a new petition against George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who killed Trayvon Martin last February.

The petition addressed to the US Department of Justice was launched after Zimmerman was found not guilty.

It’s believed that the attack against the NAACP website was launched in an effort to prevent people from signing the petition.

However, while the organizations worked on restoring the website, they moved the petition to MoveOn.org. Hundreds of thousands of people have already signed it, and the number is increasing by the minute.

Currently, the NAACP website has been restored.

In related news, Politico reports that CNN mistakenly aired a document containing Zimmerman’s social security number and phone number.

CNN said the court clerk failed to redact the document.
