WebKitGTK+, a version of the WebKit open source web engine that uses GTK+ as its user-facing frontend, has reached version 2.5.2.

WebKitGTK+ is out and includes both the WebKit1 and WebKit2 APIs by default. As for the WebKit1 API, it's now in maintenance mode and the developers will continue to fix any bugs that might pop up.

The developers have explained that "WebKitGTK+ is the GNOME platform port of the WebKit rendering engine. Offering WebKit's full functionality through a set of GObject-based APIs, it is suitable for projects requiring any kind of web integration, from hybrid HTML/CSS applications to full-fledged web browsers."

According to the changelog, the GTK+2 dependency is now optional, the ld version script is now used for non-developer builds, support has been added for user scripts to WebKitUserContentManager, and the caps negotiation failure in the playback pipeline has been fixed.

Check out the official announcement for a complete list of changes, updates, and new features. Users who intend to compile WebKitGTK+ have to keep in mind that it has a lot of dependencies.

You can download WebKitGTK+ 2.5.2 right now from the official website. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
