Now that smartphones are counted, it is all just a matter of time

You'd think that it's unlikely for such an ambitious forecast to be made, but IHS really does believe that there will be more Internet-connected video devices in 2017 than there will be people.

IHS took into account smart TVs, game consoles, smartphones, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and PCs when it made the prediction.

It thinks that, together, they will reach around 8.2 billion by the time the next 4 years are over and done with.

I suppose this could happen, since there are people who own more than one smartphone, or a smartphone and a table and a laptop sometimes. So there would be a multiplication factor there to offset the many people from third-world countries and primitive tribes that won't even get near a gadget in their lives.

Speaking of which, the world's population is expected to reach 7.4 billion in 2017.
