The Australians were there, but Google didn't show up

Google is a company that tries to celebrate every important event in our life by applying multiple changes to its products or by releasing special
campaigns meant to improve the image of the search giant. Take for example Google's doodles, the logo of the company that is modified every time its employees decide to honor a celebrity or a certain event. This way, every visitor of the official page of the search engine will know that Google is celebrating a special event, being linked to a page containing more information about the occasion.

As you probably know, Google decided to celebrate Australia Day, the Australia's official national day on January 26, by flying over multiple cities and taking photographs to include them into the Google Maps service. This product allows you to view satellite maps and other images from the entire world using a simple web-based interface accessible on the official page of the solution.

Because the company released an official announcement of the celebration, many Australians prepared for the big event by creating multiple huge messages to be photographed from the Google plane. "Aaron Schwebel is hoping that Google will help him put his marriage back on track. The IT worker from Wollongong drove up to Sydney's Queens Park in the eastern suburbs today and spread out seven white queen-sized sheets on the damp grass. On this unconventional canvas he'd written in two sets of big black letters spelling out his and his wife Karen's initials separated by a big red heart: "AKS ♥ KDS" The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

It seems like Google disappointed all the Australians that were prepared to appear on the Google Maps because the plane sent by the company didn't show up, being unable to obtain a flight permission for the requested altitude.

"Google on the other hand, got shot down by Sydney air traffic control Friday morning. In fact, Terry O'Connor, the spokesperson for Air Services Australia told Google it would be almost impossible to fly over the area they proposed. Google proposed to fly at an altitude much lower than Microsoft, at 600m," Search Engine Land reported.
