“Send us your UDID for activation and you will be able to install the latest iPhone OS 4.0 Beta firmware,” a tantalizing post at dev.macgeekblog.com reads. “Follow instructions to retrieve your UDID here,” it says, and provides a link to this page. Every iPhone and iPod touch has a unique identifier number associated with it. Known as a UDID (Unique Device ID), the code is a 40-digit sequence of letters and numbers.

“It's simple! In order to install iPhone OS 4.0 Beta on your iPhone/iPod Touch and test our beta apps, you need to register your unique device id (UDID) via our Apple developer subscription,” the site further entices visitors.

“A symbolic fee of $6 is required for activation to avoid abuse,” the site says. “Once we confirmed that your device has been added successfully, you will be able to install iPhone 4.0 Beta firmware without any restrictions!”

“A bug from Apple is preventing Windows users to install, please make sure you have access to a computer running Mac OS X to install iPhone OS 4.0!” the site adds  Moreover,.Apple demands that all testing and development be done with its tools, which only work on Mac OS X, the company’s operating system. iPhone OS 4.0 is currently for developers only, therefore will only be compatible with Mac OS X.
