Watch apps no longer need a separate storyboard

In tandem with iOS 8.2 Beta 4, Apple has released the fourth beta of Xcode 6.2, a new version of the digital toolset used to create iOS and Mac apps and, more recently, watch apps.

Xcode 6.2 is the first major update to the Apple developer software that includes the iOS 8.2 SDK with the WatchKit framework for developing apps for Apple Watch. WatchKit, for its part, includes design tools for building interfaces, glances, and notifications, as well as debugging and profiling support and watch support in iOS Simulator for testing newly-developed software.

What’s new in Xcode 6.2 Beta 4

The focus on WatchKit in the latest iOS beta is more than evident, and the same can be said about the new Xcode release.

At the beginning of the changelog dished out to all registered developers, Apple claims to have resolved some pressing issues in the new beta, including a problem with Interface Builder where WatchKit apps no longer need a separate storyboard for each notification interface.

Simulators for iOS 8.1 and iOS 7.1 are both supported now, this being the second and last fix mentioned for this particular release.

In the usual fashion, the new beta contains some known issues that remain to be resolved in future beta releases. Areas that need attention include Xcode Project Editor, Xcode Run and Debug, Watch Projects, Instruments, iOS Simulator, and Device Provisioning. The release notes for Xcode 6.2 Beta 4 also document fixes delivered in previous betas. The download is free for all registered Apple developers.
