Xeric Design has announced EarthDesk 5.5.2, an update to its real-time dynamic desktop map. The new release brings faster performance and lower processor usage, snow and vegetation change month-to-month., higher resolution cloud data on large displays, and supports machines with dual GPUs, to name a few of the enhancements.

“EarthDesk 5 is the latest release of our award-winning dynamic desktop application,” said Xeric Design.

“EarthDesk replaces your Macintosh desktop or Windows wallpaper with a stunning, real-time dynamic image of our planet continuously updating in the background while you work,” the company added.

“With up to 4 maps, 11 projections and 10,000 cities, EarthDesk is truly a map-lover's dream. Put it on your desktop today.”

Now also available in the new Mac App Store, EarthDesk is notorious for being able to deliver an image of the Earth showing current sun, moon and city illumination, as well as real-time global cloud coverage, allowing users to track hurricanes and other weather systems on their Mac.

The program operates silently in the background and, unlike a screen saver (which only appears when the system is idle), EarthDesk's dynamic desktop is continuously displayed as a desktop background.

Users also have the option to set the activity as a screen saver.

In addition to the aforementioned enhancements, EarthDesk 5.5.2 delivers the following new features and enhancements:

- Adjustable brightness and background color. - Starfield background for globe projections. - Political map shows city lights and moonlight. - Updated political map color and boundaries. - Globe projection can now be offset. - Checks for updates automatically. - Softer evaluation watermark during trial period. - 32/64 bit application, support for Snow Leopard.

EarthDesk requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later and costs $24.95 (USD) to buy from Xeric Design’s web site, or $24.99 from Apple’s Mac App Store.
