Riding the subway in New York is never a fun business, but the cast of “The Lion King” Broadway show wanted to make it a little more exciting by surprising the passengers with a live, a capella rendition of “Circle of Life,” the most famous song from the show.

The video recording shows the singer getting into the subway under cover, in plain clothes, as no one suspects they are part of an elaborate performance. As soon as the doors close and the train is set in motion, we can hear one woman start belting out the famous opening lines after, seconds earlier, she seemed to be reading a book.

Soon, she is joined by other people in the car, all of whom start singing in unison. Needless to say, people are at first startled then pleasantly surprised and some of them pull out phones and begin recording or taking photos.

The video was made in honor of “The Lion King” becoming the first Broadway production to reach one billion in earnings. The cast decided to honor the public by singing live in the New York City metro, which has served over one billion commuters in the past year.

It was their way of saying thank you, and by the looks of things, they perfectly achieved the element of surprise. Many of you probably wish they were on that train car at the time, but at least we have this video to remind us that people are awesome.

This is not the first stunt of this type. Some months ago, a similar impromptu performance was seen on a plane. This time it happened in Australia, on a Virgin airplane, and the passengers were just as surprised to see that numerous people burst out singing in unison.
