This past Monday, a black rhino living at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago gave birth to an adorable calf.

The baby rhino is a male, zookeepers say. It weighed 60 pounds (27.2 kilograms) at birth, and it is now working hard (i.e. eating as much and as often as it gets the chance) to put on weight.

The calf was born to mother Kapuki and father Maku.

It is the first baby rhino to have been born at this facility since 1989, so it need not come as a surprise that zoo employees are ready and willing to see to its every wish and desire. Some might even say they're spoiling it.

Presently, black rhinos are listed as an endangered species. The main threat to their long-term survival is poaching activities in their native Africa, conservationists explain.
