An escalator starts going in reverse at the Exchange Place station in New Jersey, and people are thrown back, landing one on top of the other on the base.

I can imagine more than 100 people are on that escalator on one given point, and it would have been very uncomfortable to be stuck there.

5 minor injuries were reported on Monday, when the mechanism started malfunctioning. Nobody was badly hurt, but I'm sure everyone was late for work, as this occurred during the busy hours of the morning.

“Suddenly there are about 20 to 30 people piled up at the bottom of the escalator because people couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. Seeing the pile I was about to be heaped on top of, I made the sudden decision to jump off the escalator on to the adjacent escalator,” a witness describes to Gothamist.
