The US is a fairly large country, not to mention the fact that it is highly industrialized. Therefore, it should not come as such a big surprise that it consumes whopping amounts of energy on a yearly basis.

The video below shows just how much power this country needs in order to keep up and running. By the looks of it, the US goes through 100 quads of energy each and every year.

Furthermore, the clip details where most of this energy comes from. Not to beat about the bush, it appears that oil, natural gas and coal are the main sources of energy in the US.

Renewables and nuclear energy are also used, but not as much as the latter.

The good news is that, over the years, coal consumption has dropped to a considerable extent. As well as this, the country's dependency on green energy sources has been steadily increasing.
