Physical and emotional pain stimulate the same part of the brain, studies have shown

Here's an interesting piece of information: physical and emotional pain stimulate the same part of the brain.

Hence the fact that, when somebody gets dumped or suffers some other emotional loss, they use words related to physical pain (eg. heartbreak, slap in the face) to describe the experience.

As explained in the video above, both physical and emotional pain are designed to enhance survival changes by telling the individual that something is seriously off.

Physical pain is there to warn us about immediate threats to our wellbeing. Emotional pain, on the other hand, tells us that we are alone.

Since humans are social creatures and need to be part of a group in order to function properly, not having anyone around is viewed by the brain as a potential threat to one's survival.

By the looks of it, the best treatment for emotional pain is having friends and family around.
