The hunters chased the defenseless animal, shot it repeatedly

The Wildlife Conservation Society has recently launched a new campaign dubbed “96 Elephants.”

The campaign got its name from the fact that 96 elephants were killed on a daily basis by poachers in Africa back in 2012, and its goal is to convince people to quit buying things made from ivory.

The video above was released as part of this campaign. It documents the death of an elephant at the hands of poachers, only that we don't get to see anything.

Except for the animal's lifeless body, once the hunters have successfully completed their mission, that is.

“Blind” as we might be, we nonetheless get to hear the poachers chasing the elephant and shooting it repeatedly. According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, the shocking audio was recorded in Gabon, Central Africa.

“This is the sound of an elephant fleeing an armed poacher as it is shot repeatedly in the forests of Central Africa,” the organization explains. “How long can you listen?” it later asks.
