Here’s how the Windows platform evolved from Windows 1.01 to Windows 8

Microsoft is now urging everyone still running Windows XP or a newer Windows version to upgrade to Windows 8, as this is the most stable, the fastest and the most secure operating system to date. At least, that’s what Microsoft claims.

An interesting project set up by a Scottish blogger shows the upgrading process from the very first Windows version, namely Windows 1.01, to the newest build released by Microsoft in October 2012.

The whole project took 3 days, out of which 12 hours have been spent just to install all Windows operating systems.

“One of the biggest problems was that Windows 95 and 98 came in two versions - Upgrade and Full. I had old disk copies of every Full version of Windows, but they cannot upgrade earlier versions,” he says.

Surprisingly, the DOS versions of Doom 2 and Monkey Island worked flawlessly on several Windows builds, including the new Windows 7, but watch the clip to get more details about the project.
