The Unity desktop environment is stating to converge

For the past couple of years, users wanted to see how this Ubuntu convergence concept will come together and now their wish has been granted. More and more details have been revealed and there are a ton of videos that show how convergence works.

Having two platforms converge is not an easy thing to do. Everyone is trying to do it, not only Canonical. Apple and Microsoft are also working on the same concepts, but they have very different approaches. The end result, at least for Ubuntu, is that users will be able to install the operating system on any platform they want and get the same experience across the board.

Also, developers will only have to make their apps ready for Ubuntu, and in theory those apps should be able to run any platform, mobile or desktop. It's a tall order and it will take a while to have everything sorted out. This won't happen before the launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which is scheduled for April 2016, so there is plenty of time to make it work.

Even if most of the convergence happens at code level, users will first notice the desktop experience and the apps. It might be hard to imagine what is happening exactly when developers say that the user experience won't change much from the phone and to the desktop, but it's much easier to make sense of it all from a video.

As usual, Popescu Sorin put together a nice video showing off the transition from the phone to the tablet and then to the PC. There is some editing magic involved, but it's only done for the purpose of this demonstration.

Also, it's worth mentioning, especially to all of the users who are going to say they don't want to see the desktop from the mobile device ported to the desktop. That is not happening. This is still pretty early work and the desktop will change considerably. In the meantime, please take a minute to enjoy this video.
