Hollywood has taken care of drilling it into our head that, were all the planets in the Solar System to line up one day, this event would be the end of life as we know it.

In a nutshell, earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis and all sorts of other natural disasters would kill thousands and reshape our good old planet. Or so movie makers would have us believe.

As it turns out, having all the planets in the Solar System line up in perfect order is, for starters, highly unlikely. This is because Earth and its companions orbit the Sun on slightly different planes.

This means that, contrary to what some might assume, a perfect alignment is downright impossible to achieve, the folks behind YouTube channel SciShow Space detail in the video below.

Even more interesting, brainiacs with NASA went through the trouble of analyzing such a hypothetical scenario back in 2000 and found that, even if all the planets were to get one behind the other, the event would go unnoticed.

Thus, the extra gravitational pull resulting from such an alignment would raise the tides on our planet by just 1/25 of a millimeter. Simply put, there is no need to worry about what having all the planets in one line would do to our home.
