Whether we like it or not, pornography is a one of the most prolific industries around, which rakes in billions of dollars each year. On the other hand (no pun intended), the porn industry is one of the most eager and early adopters of the latest technological developments in content delivery,
and the most important names in this field were the first to embrace the next-generation HD formats, or, better said, format, because porn movies have been available solely in HD DVD up until now. However, it would seem that things are about to take a serious Blu-ray turn in the future.
This is because one of the most important names in porn, Digital Playground, has decided to release its first Blu-ray title, as Julie Jacobson from
CEPro informs us. And it's no second-hand flick either, but one of the company's most successful titles, namely "Pirates", which holds the record for highest sales and rentals of XXX video (in standard format), at least according to Adult Video News.
If you were wondering what this format can do for porn, it's important to know that the Blu-ray disc will hold the entire Pirates film and all of the extras in full 1080p. In the HD DVD version, the outtakes and other goodies are rendered in standard def.
As mentioned earlier, Digital Playground is no stranger to HD. Actually, the company's founder says that bout one-third of the publisher's video shipments are now HD and this figure is very likely to go up on the future. However, the Blu-ray presented some issues (mainly the fact that Sony and its partners don't really favor the use of their format for the distribution of pornographic materials), and this is the reason why Digital Playground initially went for HD DVD.
But since numerous PS3 owners have been requesting Blu-ray versions of their favorite adult flicks, the pornographer was forced to reconsider its position, and decided to go Blu-ray too. Obviously, this is only the first in a long series of releases, so good things are bound to "come" (pun intended, this time).
P.S. I personally know quite a few PS3 owners who will most likely be extremely happy with this piece of news, especially since they will be now able to use the gaming console for their second favorite activity, beside gaming, that is.
