Anders Helstrup was skydiving over Norway when he filmed the falling rock

An amazing video which shows the moment when a Norwegian skydiver is narrowly missed by a falling meteorite has gone viral after it has been aired by NRK, the Norwegian state-owned public broadcasting company.

The unbelievable moment has been captured by two cameras attached to Anders Helstrup's helmet while he was diving over Norway two years ago.

The skydiver was in mid-air and had just opened his parachute when the rock flying at 300mph (482 km/h) passed only meters away from him. He said he didn't realize it at the time, but when he reviewed the footage, he understood he had filmed something really unusual.

“I got the feeling that there was something, but I didn't register what was happening,” Helstrup told NRK, according to Metro.

He took the footage to experts, who determined that he had indeed captured a large meteorite fragment, falling to Earth in the “dark flight” phase, when it had already cooled and was no longer emitting light.

Experts believe the rock was part of a larger meteoroid, and the story has been kept secret for two years in an attempt to find it, but the search has been fruitless so far.

If the theory is confirmed, this would be the very first time that a meteorite is filmed during “dark flight” phase.
