Grandmother Alice and sister Daizy trumpet to encourage her

A couple of days ago, a female Asian elephant at Albuquerque's BioPark delivered a healthy female calf. The video above was shot just two hours after the baby elephant's birth, and shows her desperately trying to stand up, maybe even take a few steps.

Unfortunately for the elephant calf, her legs are anything but willing to obey. But then again, the baby elephant seems determined not to give up that easily, so I'm guessing she'll be the one to win this fight, be it sooner or later.

Rozana, the calf's mother, stays by her offspring's side throughout the entire “performance,” and gently nudges her every once in a while, most likely in order to encourage her.

Apparently, the trumpeting in the background belongs to the calf's sister, Daizy, and her grandmother, Alice. Judging by all the noise they keep making, there is little doubt that the two females are delighted that their family now has a new member.
