Drones are cool and you know it. Flying quad-copters are usually used in concert with cameras, like the GoPros to capture amazing footage you’d never be able to snap while sitting on the ground.

Motorola knows the hype around drones these days, so it put up a little project to bring back attention on its second-gen Moto X.

As you might as well know, the smartphone is capable of shooting video in Ultra HD (4K) resolution. So what do you do when you have a smartphone like that at your disposal? You attach it to a drone, of course.

We jest, normal folks don’t usually do this and that’s exactly why Motorola thought it was cool to give a Moto X smartphone to professional drone operator Glenn McKenno so he could take it out for a spin.

4K is a format normally used on big screens, super sharp TVs or in filmmaking when the director wants to bring the colors’ vividness into focus.

The standard has become quite widespread in professional cameras and video rig too, so as a consequence the prices of these devices have been decreasing a lot in recent months.

Anyhow, in some particular cases 4K video shooting has also made it to smartphones and is the case of the beautiful Moto X.

You can view the video that resulted from the experiment below and Motorola highlights that the handset’s auto-exposure and auto-focus came in handy when the drone had to focus on light or dark areas.

Some of the footage was edited on a 1080 (2K) timeline and there was quite a lot of room for cropping without the end result losing much of its quality.

The video Motorola uploaded on YouTube is only in 1080p and not in 4K, so if you have a 4K display lying around, you won’t be able to watch it at its full potential. But then again, most folks don’t have a 4K screen.

Did Motorola just copy Samsung?

Motorola probably got the idea of shooting the video from Samsung which also used a drone to shoot 4K video with its flagship Galaxy Note 4.

Now for a little bit of technical info on the second-gen Moto X. The handset comes with a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 1080p and draws life from a Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5GHz fitted with 2GB of RAM.

Moto X also bundles a 13MP camera and 2300 mAh battery. Last but not least, the device can be updated to Android Lollipop.

If you want to purchase the Moto X, you should check out Motorola’s website because the device maker is offering some sweet Christmas discounts until December 23.
