Watch: Male Hippos Fight Each Other for Territory and Mates

Certain green-oriented organizations might argue that vegetarianism means that one does not approve of acts of cruelty and violence, but when it comes to the animal world this theory hardly applies.

Especially if one is dealing with hippos.

As this video explains, male hippos need to fight each other in order to obtain and then secure their territory, as this allows them to have access to females and mate.

Male hippos can usually hold on to their part of the river and to their gals until they begin to grow old.

Once this happens, young competitors will begin to pour in, and sooner or later the former “leader of the gang” will be overthrown in order to make room for a new king of the river.

From where we stand, this clash between the old and the new regime is amazing, to say the least.
