Iron Galaxy has just released the gameplay trailer for Riptor, the upcoming addition to Xbox One exclusive fighting game Killer Instinct.

The studio opted to modify the character slightly from its historical roots on the SNES / Nintendo 64, making it a cybernetically enhanced dinosaur. The trailer shows how Riptor fights and offers some context for how a dinosaur came to be part of the crew in the first place.

Riptor was created by Ultratech, the evil company that also created Fulgore and Cinder, in an attempt to develop a more resilient fighting machine that could naturally adapt to new environments and combat conditions.

The company decided to look to the past, in contrast with what was already going on, and concluded that applying some cybernetic enhancements and weaponizing one of the biggest predators that ever lived would be the best way to go about it.

Riptor features a cybernetic tail for extra reach and has the ability to breathe fire, in addition to its natural aggressivity. The dinosaur also comes in a variety of genetic flavors, displaying numerous color and accessory variations.

A bit of backstory

Riptor was born out of a brilliant genetic initiative meant to compete with the Fulgore line and Cinder initiative. A researcher thought that Fulgore's difficult maintenance would prove its downfall and that the effort to decode the alien technology that the Cinder initiative worked on would take another decade.

Consequently, she saw a better path to follow, based on a ruthless and highly adaptable predator, augmented with modern technology in order to become the ultimate combat platform.

The first batch of Riptor units were vicious, mindless brutes that tore apart everything they saw, and that could not be controlled by any means. The problem was thought to be the fact that they only shared primal genetic memories, and the researcher decided to use her own mind as a training tool for the creations, simulating an upbringing and attempting to instill some basic guidelines that would make the units act like a pack.

Riptor will become available starting tomorrow, December 17, for players who own the Ultra Edition of the game. Those who own the Season 2 Combo Breaker Edition will get to play with Riptor on December 23.

If you want to see the full range of Riptor's abilities you can check out the official Killer Instinct livestream recording from last night, on Twitch, showing some 50 minutes of gameplay.
