Building the pipeline is “not in our national interest,” Consumer Watchdog says

A new report issued by nonprofit group Consumer Watchdog argues that, should President Barack Obama give the green light to the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, the natural world won't be the only one getting hurt.

On the contrary, many American wallets will find that they are in considerable pain as well.

Long story short, the group argues that, once this controversial pipeline is up and running, gas prices in the US will up by 20-40 cents a gallon.

“US gasoline prices will rise, with the greatest effect on the Midwest. The chief purpose of the pipeline is to raise the price of Canadian tar sands by creating new export markets outside the Midwest. Statements by Alberta, Canada officials and the pipeline developers reflect this aim.”

“Their explicit intention is to export to the Gulf and abroad, which would increase the price of crude oil and gasoline in the United States and, in particular, the Midwest,” the report reads.

Therefore, the construction of the pipeline is “not in our national interest,” Consumer Watchdog argues.

The people militating in favor of this project disagree, and say that the pipeline is sure to boost the economy by creating many job opportunities.
