In one particularly touching scene in Alfonso Cuaron’s movie “Gravity,” a stranded in space Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is trying to send an SOS signal to whoever might hear and come to her assistance. At the other end of the line is Aningaaq.

The short film by the same name, made by Jonas Cuaron, the director’s son who also co-wrote the script for “Gravity,” was initially supposed to be an extra for the DVD / Blu-ray release but, THR informs, it’s been making the rounds as a standalone feature for some time now.

In fact, it’s been getting so much attention and generating such positive reviews that it’s been submitted for Oscar consideration for the live-action short category.

You can see it in full embedded below, at the end of this blog post. It features Bullock’s voice and literally constitutes the other half of the story that we didn’t get to see in “Gravity.” And it’s absolutely gorgeous and heartbreaking at the same time.

THR says the short film was shot in Greenland and cost only $100,000 (€74,288) to make, “most of which went toward the 10-person crew's travel costs.”
