Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri, US, is now home to eleven Somali asses. Five of them are foals, and were born at this facility earlier this year, between August 19 and October 15.

Keepers say that the birth of these foals is a great achievement, and that, ever since the Zoo first started breeding this species, this is the first time when so many baby wild asses were born in less than two months.

According to Zoo Borns, the foals are named Hirizi, Tristan, Rebel, Farah, and Luana. The first three are males, whereas the remainder are females, the same source details.

The foals are healthy and active, and, judging by their behavior in the video above, quite happy and at ease with the world.

For the time being, they are not even half the size of their parents. However, their caretakers reassure that it will not be long before they grow to weigh as much as 600 pounds (about 272 kilograms) and stand about 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall at the shoulder.
