Every once in a while, these marine mammals can be surprisingly violent

Folks working with National Geographic have recently gone and spent some time in Hawaii. While there, they monitored humpback whales swimming in these waters, and even filmed some of these marine mammals.

Part of the footage they obtained is available in the video above. Fair warning: if you think that humpback whales are and could never be anything other than gentle giants, you are in for a big surprise.

It turns out that these marine mammals, especially males, are no stranger to violent behavior. On the contrary, they get into fights with each other more often than one would assume.

Besides, male humpback whales almost never hesitate to deliver some very heavy blows to their opponents when circumstances demand for it.

Female humpback whales can also be pretty aggressive sometimes, and they chiefly get into fights looking to protect their offspring.

Apart from showing a pair of males fighting with each other, this video includes footage of a newborn humpback whale swimming alongside its mom.

The calf looks utterly adorable as it learns from its mom how to swim to the surface in order to breathe, and plays in the water, which is why I for one am having trouble believing that it could grow to become a violent male such as the ones shown at the beginning of the video.
