We humans first discovered meditation thousands of years ago and plenty of guys and gals still practice it in this day and age. These folks all say that meditation helps both their mental and their physical wellbeing.

What's interesting is that, as explained in the animation below, these claims that meditation can help people feel better and have an easier time dealing with everyday stress at home or at the office are not complete mumbo-jumbo.

On the contrary, several studies have shown that meditation decreases anxiety levels and even helps fight depression, while at the same time improving memory, self-awareness and making it easier for people to achieve their goals.

In fact, evidence indicates that meditation can actually transform the size and the shape of a person's brain. Specifically, this practice correlates with increased grey matter density in brain regions associated with learning, memory and emotions.

Apart from helping us have an easier time handling our work routine, it appears that meditation benefits our immune system. Specifically, it boosts the body's ability to fight infections and other threats by stimulating the production of cells designed to find and kill invaders.

Then again, it's important to keep it mind that meditation cannot counteract the negative effects of having one too many vices. Otherwise put, don't eat loads of junk food and then meditate, as this won't help keep you slim.
