First off, I would like to offer my apologies to those of you who are on a diet and who might stray away from this righteous path after watching all sorts of images of candy, ice cream, and cookies dancing and prancing around in the video below.

The again, we're here to talk science and I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to share this cool video with you guys. More so since Halloween is just around the corner and plenty of folks are getting ready to stuff their faces with everything sweet.

In a nutshell, this science video explains why it is that us humans crave sweet foods and why it is that these treats taste as heavenly as they do.

Now, this might come as a surprise, but apparently, our romance with sweets is not some weird plot to get us to throw away our bathing suits and buy new, bigger ones every year.

Simply put, we humans have evolved to have a sweet tooth because foods containing sucrose, glucose, fructose, and other similar compounds – which, by the way, are all listed as carbohydrates – are a great source of energy.

Thousands of years ago, there really weren't all that many energy sources to pick and choose from. Consequently, early humans took quite a liking to all things sweet and never said no to an opportunity to feast on such a treat.

Interestingly enough, it appears that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame help people keep their weight in check without having to sacrifice the taste of their favorite beverages or snacks because, from a chemical standpoint, they resemble not carbohydrates, but proteins.
