Great white sharks are among the absolute biggest creatures that populate our planet's oceans in this day and age, and they have an appetite to match.

Now, we all know that great whites love and adore hunting and feeding on seals and sea lions. Even so, they aren't shy about turning into scavengers when opportunity presents itself.

The already-dead meals that these sharks almost never refuse are whale carcasses. Recently, one such corpse popped up in the waters off the coast of New York, US.

A great white in the area sniffed it out, swam up to it and got busy tearing off chunks of meat and blubber and gulping them down. The incident was caught on film by a man named Johnny Beau and his buddies, who later posted the video online.

The footage, available below, was shot some 30 miles (nearly 50 kilometers) off Jones Inlet and shows the shark circling the whale carcass and fiercely biting it. The corpse is in such bad shape that it's impossible to tell which species it might belong to.

According to Johnny Beau, this great white shark that he and his friends chanced to see feeding on the marine mammal cadaver measured about 12 feet (roughly 3.6 meters) from head to tail.
