Watch Dogs, the upcoming open-world game from Ubisoft, has been in development for over four years and for much of that time developer Ubisoft Montreal worked with current platforms like the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, as only recently did it receive a PlayStation 4 dev kit and started bringing the game to the new console.

Watch Dogs amazed millions of gamers back at E3 2012 last year when it received a high-quality gameplay demonstration that made plenty of people speculate that the title would appear only for powerful PCs and for next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 4 or the oft-rumored Xbox 720.

That's not the case, however, as Ubisoft Montreal's Jonathan Morin has told Digital Trends that Watch Dogs has been in development for around four years and that the studio received PlayStation 4 dev kits at the end of 2012.

"When PS4 shows up, to us it’s like 'OK, here’s a new set of tools and possibilities to think about,'" Morin said. "So I think that progressively every month we’ll discover new opportunities to make it grow to the next level, but the soul of the project will remain the same on every platform."

The limitations imposed by current-generation consoles like the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or Wii U forced the development team to reimagine a lot of core game creation principles and let everyone in on the design process so that there aren't any arguments.

"The only way to do that is to create a vision together with them, where they always feel like we have this crazy dream that doesn’t take into consideration limitations. That way you don’t make decision for the experts, the experts can come to you. Then you can start by them saying you’re insane," Morin said.

"If you go into more detail and how you see it, then they go back to their desks and they think about it, and they find very articulated and very artistic ways to countermeasure limitation, and invent new ways of doing things. And I think that’s how making games should happen."

Watch Dogs is supposed to appear at the end of the year for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U as well as for PS4 and possibly for the Xbox 720.
