On Wednesday, June 26, Christiano Ronaldo planted a mangrove tree on the island of Bali in Indonesia.

The footballer explained that he only became interested in mangrove preservation after learning that these trees protected coastal areas against the devastating effects of tsunamis.

Apparently, what really shook him up and determined him to get involved in such projects was witnessing the devastating effects of the tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004.

This tsunami was caused by an earthquake that struck in the Indian Ocean. The shake's magnitude was of 9.1 – 9.3 on the Richter scale.

Christiano Ronaldo is now an ambassador for the Mangrove Care Forum, and attended this tree planting ceremony in Bali, Indonesia hoping to raise awareness about the need to protect mangrove swamps.

Indonesia's current President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, also took part in this ceremony and planted a mangrove tree himself.
