The big cat is the world's fastest sprinter, but can only run for about one minute

Although tigers and lions are the world's most popular big cats, mainly because of their amazing strength, cheetahs are also pretty fascinating animals, which hold the world record for sprinting on land.

Their favorite prey might be fast, but – as this video shows –, the speed gazelles can reach is simply no match for the cheetah. Thus, these cats have been found to be able to run with as much as 70 miles per hour (roughly 112 kilometers per hour).

Still, because they can reach such incredible speeds in relatively short amounts of time, they can only keep up the pace for about a minute or so before their body heats up and they are forced to abandon the chase.

Just for the record, cheetahs are presently listed as a vulnerable species and might face some very difficult times in the not so distant future if efforts are not made to protect both their natural habitats, and their prey.
