Some tend to bring psychology to the table whenever discussing why it is that people who have pets are more likely to make new friends than those who do not share their homes with animals such as cats and dogs.

However, it seems that, as far as having cats as pets is concerned, there is a scientific explanation for why these felines make people more friendly and outgoing.

To cut a long story short, cats can infect individuals with a common parasite known to science as Toxoplasma gondii.

Since this parasite toys with certain hormones concentrations and also increases the body concentration of dopamine, cat owners tend to lose their inhibitions and become more willing to socialize and meet new people.

We can only hope this piece of news won't translate into some people's using their cat as an excuse for the occasionally reckless behavior.
