The biologists managed to free the whale of most of the rope it was carrying behind it

Last week, biologists with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission had the chance to lend a helping hand to a North Atlantic right whale estimated to be about four years old.

As shown in the video above, the whale was carrying a fairly long rope behind it, and was unable to free itself on its own.

Probably because part of the rope was entangled in the marine mammal's baleen, the biologists did not manage to completely disentangle the whale.

They did, however, succeeded in cutting off a significant portion of the rope, and hope that the marine mammal will eventually shed what remained of it on its own.

“Judging from its wounds, I suspect this whale had been hauling that rope for weeks or longer,” wildlife researcher Clay George said in a statement, as cited by Huffington Post.

“It’s impossible to know if he’ll survive, but at least we gave him a fighting chance,” he added.

As soon as the whale is spotted again and specialists figure out whether it is still entangled in the remaining portion of the rope or not, be sure you will learn about it here.
