It's only a matter of days before the 2014 Sochi Olympics begin, and the folks at AsapSCIENCE have been cool enough to set aside their usual working agenda and focus on this event instead.

This February 2, they released this video documenting several amazing facts concerning the Olympics, and I for one found it most interesting to watch.

Apparently, the gold medals that are to be handed at the Sochi Olympics are not entirely made out of this precious metal. On the contrary, they are made of silver, and just coated in gold.

What's more, the bronze medals are estimated to be worth some $4 (€2.96), which is kind of a disappointment, if you ask me.

Check out the video to learn when a gold medal entirely made from this metal was last handed out.

I would also recommend that you have a pen and a piece of paper at ready, just in case you find some of the facts documented in this video so interesting that you want to write them down and do some further investigative work on your own.

Together with CBS, AsapSCIENCE plans to release several more such videos on the Olympics. When this happens, be sure you'll learn about it here.
