The live-action production looks pretty good, hopefully more such efforts will surface

inXile's upcoming classic role-playing game Wasteland 2 has just gotten its opening cinematic, setting the scene for the post-apocalyptic action to come.

The game places you in control of a group of characters and then pretty much lets you roam the desolate world and find your own way to fame and glory, or follow the path that was laid out in front of you in the form of the main story, with a lot of focus on personal choice and freedom of action.

Wasteland 2 is also full of references to the original 1988 game, and players of Wasteland will surely remember some of the returning cast members that played an important part in the first game's lore.

The video was unveiled during the London Comic Con this weekend, where Brian Fargo, founder of inXile Entertainment, talked about the upcoming game and his success with crowdfunding.

The entire presentation can be watched on Resero Network's Twitch.tv channel, for those interested in finding out more about how Wasteland 2 came to be.

The presentation also features a ton of gameplay, with Brian Fargo showcasing the level of freedom offered to players of Wasteland 2, showing how each character lends his skills to the action, from new dialogue opportunities that allow you to bluff and intimidate your way through otherwise unsolvable situations to using the "animal whisperer" skill to charm various wild beasts.

inXile allows players to do everything they want every time they want to, like re-enacting veritable Mexican standoffs, where you can attempt to sway uncooperative non-playable characters your way through the magical power of persuasion that guns have, with the only caveat being that players then have to live with the consequences of their actions.

The opening movie for the game is a gritty, live-action film detailing the beginning of the apocalypse and how the Desert Rangers rose from the ashes of the old world in order to preserve the last remnants of civilization and decency.

The video has a distinct Mad Max vibe, which fits the game like a glove, considering that the original Wasteland, that came out in 1988, was the grandfather of all post-apocalyptic role-playing games and inspired the legendary Fallout series.

Wasteland 2 is currently available on Steam Early Access and is scheduled for release at the end of August 2014.
