Although summer is still far away, Sustainable Surf, a California-based non-profit organization has committed to collect old foam waste using it to create new stronger, lighter boards with an ecological footprint lowered by up to 50%.

Their program, entitled Waste to Waves gives a new purpose to styrofoam, technically known as EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), the clean white pieces that often come along with our new computer screens or TVs.

In order to encourage surfers to donate their waste packaging foam, the nonprofit is collaborating with local surf shops from California, where people can come in and abandon their useless pieces of styrofoam.

In order to make the new product even greener, bio-based resin and organic laminants seem to be all the necessary elements to create a 100% eco-friendly Ecoboard.

The ultimate goal is to halve the environmental impact of surfing boards, keeping plastic pollution far away from landfills, and ultimately from beaches, oceans and waves.
