Warsow, a first-person shooter developed to work on multiple platforms, including Linux, has just reached version 1.5.

There was a time when free FPS multiplayer games were all over the place. The Linux platform was a natural medium for such games, but in the last few years the number of free titles has been decreasing. Only a handful of them are still being developed, but that might be a good thing for Warsow.

Warsow is a game that is aimed at Quake fans and the gameplay reflects this aspect. It’s fast-paced and the levels are large and easy to learn.

“Jason Padpork, the heroic pig of war, has gone through a complete visual makeover. The new player model has been created from scratch by Matteo Pignatelli and funded by the Warsow community. We believe the new model manages to better represent the character that Padpork is, and to bring the player model up to date with the modern advances in Warsows visuals.”

“The newly improved default movement makes it easier for new players to get a grip of the basics, while simultaneously allowing experienced Warsowians to even further express their art of movement. However, old school movement is still available as a possible movement style,” reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, a built-in HTTP server (TCP port 44444) has been added to serve UI AJAX queries, localization support has been added to User Interface and HUD, support has been added for TrueType and OpenType fonts, the support for bitmap fonts has been dropped, the support for Quake1 and Quake2 maps has been removed, the input code has been updated so that it can use XInput2, the window manager is now able to bypass compositing in fullscreen mode, and the maximum number of simultaneously loaded models, sounds, and shaders has been increased.

Also, the Jason Padpork player model has been updated, 5 new tracks have been added to the Warsow OST, rendering backend has been rewritten in order to be GLSL2+ compatible, GLSL shaders are now loaded from disk allowing customization and easing development, support has been added for foliage surfaces and instanced rendering, FXAA support has been added, TAB-completion of player names has been added in the chat box, and the “Watch on TV” button has been added to chasecam menu.
