Warsow, a first-person shooter developed to work on multiple platforms, including Linux, has just received a major update.

Warsow is one of the few surviving truly free multiplayer games that are still under development for the Linux platform. The game is built to appeal mostly to the players and fans of the old Quake 3, with its fast-paced gameplay and ridiculous physics principles.

Unlike Quake or any of its other counterparts, Warsow uses a cartoonish look and feel and is a lot less violent that its rivals.

“Speed and movement is what Warsow is all about. Like a true cyberathlete you jump, dash, dodge, and walljump your way through the game. Grab power-ups before your enemy does, plant a bomb before anyone sees you, and steal the enemy’s flag before they know what is going on!”

“Our goal is to offer a fast and fun competitive first-person shooter without hard graphical violence - Warsow has no blood or guts flying around. Red stars instead of blood indicate hits and colored cubes replace guts as gib effects,” reads the official website of the game.

Warsow is built on an open source engine and everybody can design mods for it. Players can also run their own servers and the game has the infrastructure in place for Warsow TV (with OGG audio stream support).

Unfortunately, the updates for Warsaw are few and far between, but when they do show up they usually come with a lot of features, changes, and fixes.

According to the developers, the Internet ogg streams have been fixed, a server crash that occurred when reporting match results to the MM has been fixed, the batched autosprite2 surfaces in wdm19 and other maps have been fixed, demos are now GZ-compressed on the fly, and users can now copy console contents to clipboard in Linux.

Also, the fullscreen mode setting in i3, WindowMaker, and possibly other X11 window managers has been fixed, the race servers have been split into separate tabs in the server browser, the dedicated servers refresh the IP addresses of the master servers every 24 hours, r_texturefilter now defaults to 4, the UI now remembers the last selected tab in the server browser, and much more.

Keep in mind that this is not a final release for this version, so it's very likely that you might still encounter bugs. For more details about this build you can check out the official changelog. You can download Warsow 1.4 RC right now from Softpedia.
