Medicare scam attempts to steal sensitive information

This is the second phone scam of the week and I've already started thinking that these people really think they are able to steal somebody's information by asking them to provide it. In fact, they can, if the victims are naive enough to disclose it. But, let's get back to today's piece of news: a scammer who claimed to be a Medicare agent called several residents of Laguna Woods Village, asking for their Medicare and Social Security number, OCRegister reported today. Because one of the potential victims who received the phone call didn't trust the fake agent, he contacted Medicare to find out what happened. He then found out that he could be a victim of a phone scam, as the caller was only attempting to get his private information.

But let's see how did the fake agent try to trick people into disclosing their details. First of all, he said that Medicare prepared a new card, so he would need some information in order to activate it. This would be a great reason for convincing residents to give their data, but what did he do when he was asked more information? He hung up.

As I said, another phone scam was reported a few days ago, but that one appears to be more dangerous than today's illegal activity. Some people received a phone call telling them one of their relatives has been hurt into an accident and in order to get more information about the accident, they had to enter a code. The main problem was that the code allowed the attackers to connect to the victims' phone accounts and charge calls to them.

Is there any solution to block these freaky phone calls? No, but once you receive such a call, don't disclose your private details, especially to an unknown person who demands them by phone!
