Originally, they wanted a sequel but Will Smith declined

We can all agree that “I Am Legend” was a good movie, or, at least, a decent enough movie that would have earned the right to have a sequel. The studio behind the movie, Warner Bros, would have loved nothing more than to give us that sequel, but as it turns out, the lead actor, Will Smith, didn't want to do another movie, so a new plan of action was needed.

Deadline is reporting that work has already begun on a reboot of the movie, an adaptation of the Richard Matheson horror novel. It seems that Gary Graham's “A Garden at the End of the World” script is being retrofitted to the “I Am Legend” world.

Since the first draft has been already done, reports from behind the scenes claim that the movie is going to be a “sci-fi version of John Wayne's ‘The Searchers.’”

The reboot is going to involve some of the original producers in the film, Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter and Joby Harold.

As you can expect, Will Smith will not be appearing in this movie, since it's known that he's not big on sequels, which is kind of the reason why he turned down “Independence Day 2,” despite the fact that it has the potential to become another blockbuster.
