It’s a bad day to be a Superman and / or Batman fan because Warner Bros. has just announced that Zack Snyder’s follow up to last year’s “Man of Steel,” the tentatively titled “Batman vs. Superman,” will be arriving in theaters much later than initially scheduled – by almost one year.

The film, which is considered one of the most anticipated of recent years, was supposed to come out on July 17, 2015, with production scheduled to start in early 2014.

The movie studio has had a change of heart and decided to push the release back to May 6, 2016. The countdown to one of the most epic superhero showdowns ever on a cinema screen has just been delayed by 2 years and 3 months.

“In a statement, the studio said that the decision to change the release date was made to allow returning director Zack Snyder and his crew, ‘time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story’,” Yahoo! News reports.

However, the move might have also been a strategic one: not that Warner Bros. is fearing competition that much, but the prospect of having too tight a race for the number one position at the box office must not have pleased the brass.

The summer 2015 schedule is already packed, with several tentpole movies coming out, including “Terminator,” “Fast & Furious,” “The Avengers,” and “Fantastic Four.” That’s a lot of superheroes and action heroes crammed in just a few months.

Warners will still be putting a movie out next summer, in lieu of “Batman vs. Superman.”

“Warner Bros. also announced that replacing the ‘Man of Steel’ sequel in its original release date would be their new version of Peter Pan. Directed by Joe Wright (‘Atonement,’ ‘The Soloist’), this retelling of J.M. Barrie's classic is said to be an origin story of how Peter and Captain Hook came to be Arch enemies. Hugh Jackman is reportedly set to play the villainous pirate Blackbeard in the movie,” the aforementioned publication says.
