Mythic Entertainment has announced that Warhammer Online is nearing its two year anniversary, with some rewards coming for those players who have kept their commitment to the game going for the entire time.

The official post on the company's site begins with an in world introduction, saying, “The sounds of celebration and battle can be heard throughout the Old World. Fireworks, cheers and the roar of battle rings in the ears of combatants from both Realms…but there is a dark undertone heard beneath; the skittering of Skaven claws!”

There are two rewards for veteran players, both designed to show the company's appreciation for the time they have put in while also giving them a slight edge against newer Warhammer gamers.

The Double Aegis will shield players from fear effects in game while a regenerating Firework Launcher is purely cosmetic and will allow players to create celebrations on the spot.

Gamers will also get a Celebratory Cloak which will mark their status as veterans.

Warhammer Online was launched with great fanfare by developer Mythic Entertainment and publisher Electronic Arts with some expecting it to go head to head with World of Warcraft, the most popular subscription based MMO created by Blizzard.

The Warhammer MMO managed to have a good launch and initial reports were also encouraging but the game gradually lost players as World of Warcraft got a new expansion and as some aspects of the Mythic MMO came under criticism.

With the success that The Lord of the Rings Online has enjoyed since it was launched as a free to play MMO a lot of rumors have popped up that Warhammer Online will take the same route as some point in the future.

The people at Mythic have said that WAR would not be ditching subscriptions in the near term and that the developers are working hard to create more faction versus faction content to emphasize the unique nature of Warhammer.
