A post on the official game forums seems to announce that the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine shooter will get support for cooperative multiplayer after launch via a patch.

The information comes from a post that has since been removed by its author but has not been lost by Google cache.

A community manager states, “Since 100 new posts are made every day around Co-Op I felt the need to make an official post to clarify a few things about the game mode.”

He adds, “1.) Space Marine will have Co-Op added in 30 days give or take after launch. a.) Why? We wanted to polish up the Co-Op aspect of Space Marine. 2.) The GameStop Co-Op call out was old information and we have a nice slate of info to cover all your Co-Op needs. 3.) Everyone who purchases Space Marine at retail (brand new) will get Co-Op for FREE. If you buy the game one year from now the Co-Op option will still be Free as long as the game is sealed brand new from retail.”

The last bit of the posts suggests that cooperative multiplayer play might actually be held back by the developers at Relic in order to implement a Online Pass like system for the game that makes it more attractive to pick it up new than used.

Space Marine is the first game that publisher THQ and developer Relic have created in the shooter space using the Warhammer 40,000 license that they have used so well in the real time strategy space with the Dawn of War series.

The game will emphasize fast flowing action and will see a Space Marine captain work to hold off an Ork invasion of a Forge World.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is set to arrive in early September on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
