A recent interview revealed Vigil Games' intention regarding the ranged combat in Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online. The developer promised that it will not be the same as in other MMORPG, but it will not handle like a third person shooter either.

Tim Campbell, executive producer at Vigil Games, told Rock, Paper, Shotgun during Gamescom 2010 that, while Dark Millennium Online would handle like a traditional massively multiplayer online role playing game in terms of progression, the moment-to-moment gameplay would be totally different.

"The first thing we realised is that if you try to do traditional MMO combat with guns, it doesn’t work. You have like, a tank with a gun? It doesn’t make sense," the developer explained.

"And because the IP is really visceral and powerful, we wanted to amp the action up. So, it’s much more action-based. But we don’t want to talk about that just yet.

"What I will say is that walking through these halls, you can spot an MMO from forty feet away. There’s something about ‘em. They’ve got a million buttons, and you target enemies and attack them, and the whole thing is so easily identifiable.

"But because of our presentation and interface, if you walked by our game on the show floor, you wouldn’t think it was an MMO. At that level, it doesn’t play like an MMO."

Campbell explained that the ranged combat in Dark Millennium Online could be associated with Diablo's melee combat put into a spectrum that went from World of Warcraft's automation to Devil May Cry's hardcore urgency.

In the same way, gun play in Vigil's game would neither work automatically, nor it wouldn't be like in a Call of Duty title, but it would place somewhere in between.

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online has not received a release date yet and the only known playable faction at the moment is the Imperium of Man.
