War of The Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, took $204.2 million in 5 days, with $101.7 only in U.S. , distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday. The movie, an adaptation of HG Wells novel, had a $132 million-budget.
Although it couldn't broke of the $152 million record that "Spider-Man 2" earned during the last year's U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend, beat the opening of box office champion "Batman Begins," which earned $72.9 million in it's first five days.
Only a few movies succeed to pass the $100 million hedge: Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith ($144 million), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($123.5 million), The Matrix Revolutions ($119 million) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($113 million).
