Developer Fatshark and publisher Paradox Interactive announce that they are working on a new video game called War of Vikings, a new multiplayer focused video game that will give players a chance to create their own warrior and then attack England as a Norseman or defend it as a Saxon.

The core mechanics of the new titles are based on those that players are already familiar with from War of the Roses and will focus on unique weapons, close quarters battles and a wide array of customization options for all characters.

War of the Vikings will take gamers to the England of the IX and X centuries, with the environments, weapons and overall visual style of the experience based on deep historical research.

Gordon Van Dyke, executive producer at Fatshark, states in the announcement that, “War of the Roses was a fantastic experience for us to launch, and as it’s evolved over time, eventually growing into its current Kingmaker edition, we’ve been inspired many times over by the possibilities of the close-combat genre.”

He adds, “It’s clear to us that that there are many more experiences we can share with our players, and War of the Vikings is our next step in establishing Paradox and Fatshark as leaders in the art of online war.”

The combat in the game will be entirely based on the skill of the player, who can swing, dodge and block in order to get his opponent off balance and take him out.

More options will be added to squads in War of the Vikings, allowing players to define roles and assign perks in order to create an effective group of warriors.

The game will include 64 player battles and a new mode called Pitched Arena limits the number at 32 and eliminates respawns, in order to create a more realistic experience.

War of the Vikings will be launched on the PC in the first quarter of 2014.
