Video game developer Fatshark and publisher Paradox Interactive announce that all Steam users will be able to play the upcoming War of Vikings for free starting today, taking advantage of the latest features that have been added to the close combat experience.

The teams also announce that they are planning to add javelins, which can instantly go through shields, and spears, designed to push warriors back, to the battlefield in order to create a bigger variety when it comes to tactics.

A new map is also being added, meant to allow a group of Viking raiders to go from a beach landing spot to a monastery they plan to loot while the Saxon forces are fighting to stop them.

Fatshark is also adding a Battle Chatter system and it explains that: “Characters will call out thanks to their teammates when revived, or warn allies of incoming archer fire – or simply bellow angrily at their enemies.”

War of the Vikings will end its free game period on December 8 and gamers can then pay to get it in beta form via Steam.
